Woman Power: The Veil
Ongoing Series since 2020
This series isn’t only about walking through a veil; it is an homage to the formidable women who have shaped my life, from my beloved mother, Lucy Maxine, to my Cherokee great-great-great-great-grandmother, Sarah McClellan. As women, we carry the weight of self-care alongside the profound responsibility of nurturing others throughout our journey.
These deconstructed images begin as a simple shadow of myself—a reflection of the fact that we begin to deconstruct the moment we are born. The elongated fingers in these works are designed to gather the energy of those in need, allowing me to collect love and broadcast it back into the world. The long legs represent the ability to walk far, ensuring we are seen, heard, and noticed. Family members join in the images as well.
I use the TV screen as a metaphor for broadcasting our purpose. As women and elders, we are often rendered invisible, left with "holes" that are not fully filled. Yet, we can bridge those gaps with our life stories, our friends, our family, the animals we’ve been blessed with, and the nature that surrounds us. We are transparent, yet present.
These images are not meant to project fear. Instead, they represent a sanctuary of care provided by the giants who walked before us—the shapeshifters and spirits who travel between life and death. Through a play of color, opacity, and form, I hope to share a sense of joy and strength. I want viewers, particularly women, to recognize their own magnitude and the vital importance of their lived experiences.
